An Attack of the Titans fan has developed a free video game. After a year, the game has been downloaded 10 million times.
The must-read manga and anime Attack of the Titans (Shingeki no Kyojin) has marked the last decade, providing millions of passionate fans with an adventure as sordid as it is thrilling around the charismatic character of Eren Jäger.
Lauded for its impressive fight scenes that blended traditional animation with inspired 3D staging, the SnK anime magnified its characters as they veered at full speed around powerful titans with insatiable appetites.
Naturally, many of these fans have dreamed for years of being able to play as one of these Exploration Battalion soldiers through the video game. Unfortunately, the messiah is still waiting, as no current adaptation has really been able to make a convincing case.
A fan takes charge and develops his SnK game
What it took to deliver an excellent Attack of the Titans game may just be the talent and creative mind of an indie developer who is a fan of Shingeki no Kyojin.
It was without any particular ambition that Swammy, an independent developer, wondered what a first-person Attack of the Titans game would look like. After some experimentation, he managed to release a playable first draft of his title Swammy’s AOT Fan Game.
It was finally TikTok who would change the game. After posting a short video showcasing his project, Swammy was stunned to see thousands of fans interested in his game.
Swammy could have settled for this unexpected success and moved on, but our developer still had it in him. In just a few months, he developed a multiplayer mode, improved his game’s gameplay, graphics and animations… and even ported his game to mobile.
For both the game’s updates and its initial presentation, SnK’s fans have responded. After barely a year in existence, Swammy’s AOT Fan Game has been downloaded over 10 million times.
